Our Coaches

2016 - 2017 Season

HoCo's coaches are enthusiastic passionate individuals with a vast experience of playing and coaching lacrosse.  Our coaches have coached at the youth, travel, club high school and college levels.  All of our coaches are also members of the Howard County Coaches Registry (for more information on the Coaches Registry, visit http://www.howardcountymd.gov/coachesregistry.htm).

2018 COACHING STAFF

Josh Hatmaker

2018 Head Coach

Coach Hatmaker is a 1997 graduate of Glenelg HS and has been coaching at the school since 2003.  Next year will be his 12th year as Glenelg's boys lacrosse head coach.  Since he took over as head lacrosse coach, Glenelg's boys program won Maryland State Championships in 2007, 2008, and 2011.  In 2007 Coach Hatmaker was named Maryland's Lacrosse Coach of the Year.  In 2008 he was named All-Metro Coach of the Year by the Washington Post, and the  Baltimore Sun named him 2011 All-Metro Coach of the Year.   Coach Hatmaker was Howard County Coach of the Year in 2006, 2011, and 2012.

Joe Derwent

2018 Assistant Head Coach

Coach Derwent is a 2004 Graduate of Glenelg High School where he played football, basketball, and lacrosse.  After high school, Coach Derwent went on to play Division I Lacrosse for Coach Tom Granvante at Mt. St. Mary’s College College in Emmitsburg, MD.  Coach Derwent credits Coach Gravante for his love of lacrosse and coaching. At the Mount Coach Derwent served as the captain his senior year in 2008, and he played in 2 MAAC championships.  After graduating Coach Derwent starting coaching at Glenelg High School, where he is credited with developing the team’s attack and midfield.

Darren Silk

2019 Pink Head Coach & HoCo Finance Director

Coach Silk is a graduate of Perry Hall High School where he played football and lacrosse. He's a graduate of the University of Baltimore and played club lacrosse for several years.  Darren has over 10 years of coaching experience in Howard County travel lacrosse program. He has led his teams to numerous championships and playoff appearances including:  Hogan's Hershey Champion (2015), Madlax Summer Classic Champion (2014), Summer Sizzle Champion (2014), Howard County Club League Champion (2014), Howard County Club League Champion (2013), and finalist at Beach Lax (2009) and  Lax Splash (2008) just to name a few. He lives in Howard County, MD with wife Diana and their three boys.

Matt Richter

2019 Coach

Coach Richter has been coaching in the Marriotts Ridge HS boys’ lacrosse program since 2011. He graduated from Glenelg High School in 2005, where he played defense on the varsity lacrosse team for all four years of High School. During his time at Glenelg he was a three-time 1st team All- Howard County selection. He was also on the 2004 Maryland Freestate team.  After graduating from Glenelg High School, Coach Richter went to Towson University and played lacrosse under Coach Tony Seaman. Coach Richter started 38 games during his time as a Towson Tiger.

Chris Ashcraft

2020 Head Coach

Coach Ashcraft is a 2008 graduate of South Carroll High School, where he played 3 years of varsity lacrosse.  Coach Ashcraft was a 3 time All- County player and a C. Markland Kelly award finalist in 2008.  Coach Ashcraft then played lacrosse at Guilford College, where he was a four year starter from 2009-2012, and finished his collegiate career with 77 goals and 30 assists.  As a senior, Coach Ashcraft was the Quaker's team captain.  Coach Ashcraft graduated from Guilford in December 2012, and jumped right into coaching in the spring of 2013, where he made an immediate impact at Glenelg High School. 

Jeff Doughty

2021 Head Coach, 2020 Assistant Coach & HoCo Club Lacrosse Director

Coach Doughty is a graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius High School in Syracuse, NY and played lacrosse all of his four years at Cornell University.  After college he was the assistant head coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and then played in the indoor professional league with the Baltimore Thunder and in the USCLA league.  He currently plays in the (old man) Maryland Masters league.   Jeff has coached both boys and girls youth, travel, high school and college lacrosse for over 25 years.   He lives in Howard County, MD with wife Kathy and their four lacrosse playing children.  

Todd Hopkins

2020 Assistant Coach

Coach Hopkins is a graduate of Corning East High School in Corning, New York.  After playing lacrosse there for four years, he was the Assistant JV coach in 1983 and 1984.  Coach Hopkins went on to play lacrosse at Radford University.  At Radford, Todd was selected Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986.  He was also a Team Captain those two years.  After college, Coach Hopkins played on several local club lacrosse teams, including NOVA LC, Illchester LC, and Lil' Abners LC.  He resumed coaching five years ago in the HCLP, the last three years as a Cobra Assistant Coach.  Todd lives in Clarksville, Maryland with his wife Gina and their two children.

Andrew Manos

Goalie Position Specialist & 2020 Assistant Coach

Coach Manos graduated from Marple-Newton Sr. High School 1990, where as a senior he was selected as the Commonweath's All-Star goalie for Southeastern Pennsylvania.  Coach Manos began his college playing career at #1 ranked Division I Loyola College in Baltimore.  He then transferred to perennial Division III powerhouse Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, where he continued protecting the cage for the Shoremen.  In addition to coaching youth boys and girls lacrosse for the last six years, Coach Manos also competes in the Maryland Masters League.  Andrew earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, as well as his MBA and Finance degrees.  He currently runs a cloud services business for an industry leading software company.  Andrew lives in Howard County, MD with his wife Bethany and two lacrosse playing kids.

Sean Murphy

2020 Assistant Coach

Coach Murphy is a 1989 graduate of Mount Saint Joseph High School in Catonsville, MD, where he played four years of football and lacrosse.  He went on to play four years of lacrosse at UMBC as a long stick midfielder, graduating in 1993.  Since college, Murph has played for various men’s club lacrosse teams and currently plays in the Maryland Masters League.  He has coached at various levels of youth, travel and club lacrosse for the last 7 years.  Sean lives in Western Howard County, MD with his wife Erin, son & daughter.

Ronnie Smith

2019/2020 Head Coach Coach, 2021 Assistant Coach

Ron Smith played midfield for four years at UMBC in the 1970s for Hall of Fame Coach Dick Watts.  After College, Coach Smith played five years with the Maryland Lacrosse Club, and then with the Crease, Bud Light, Towson, and Overlea lacrosse clubs.  Ron also played and coached in the Hero’s summer league when it was not uncommon to have two or three All-Americans on a team.  Coach Smith eventually returned to UMBC, where he was an assistant coach for twelve years before reluctantly leaving coaching to focus on career and family.  Ron returned to coaching about fifteen years ago, when his son was playing in HCLP.  Ron has continued to coach HCLP and Cobra teams to have an impact on a new generation of players and help them learn to love the game.

Jeff Doughty

2021 Head Coach, 2020 Assistant Coach & HoCo Club Lacrosse Director

Steve Kingsbury

Coach Kingsbury is a graduate of The Pomfret School in Connecticut; playing four years of football and lacrosse.  While at Syracuse University, Steve played both Varsity B and Club Lacrosse and after graduating played for NYAC, Washington and America Online Lacrosse Clubs.  He is currently playing in the Maryland Masters League for Glyndon/Koopers.  Steve has coached at various levels of youth lacrosse for the last 10 years and lives in Howard County with his wife Suzanne and three children.

Charlie Fleck

2022 Head Coach

Coach Fleck has been coaching youth and travel lacrosse in Howard County for seven years, and he is currently the President of the Howard County Lacrosse Program.  Coach Fleck is a 1990 graduate of Mt. Hebron High School where he was named 2nd team all county and a member of the Howard County Allstar team.  Post-collegiately, Charlie played five years with Glyndon Men’s Lacrosse Club.  Charlie and his wife Kristen live in Ellicott City with their three lacrosse playing children.  While not coaching lacrosse, Charlie is a partner is two local small businesses.

Joe Cavey

2023 Head Coach

Joe Cavey started playing lacrosse when he was 8 years old, in his backyard with his 2 brothers.  Joe and his brothers (a.k.a. the Cavey Triplets) played Howard County Lacrosse, Cobra Lacrosse, and high school lacrosse together.  Coach Cavey was a 2-year Captain and 1st Team All-County lacrosse player at Atholton High School.  Coach Cavey played college lacrosse at Bucknell University.  Having played for 2 legendary coaches -- Wendall Thomas (AHS) and Sid Jamieson (Bucknell), Coach Cavey has astute knowledge of lacrosse fundamentals and strategy.  Joe Cavey has coached in the Howard County Lacrosse Program for 6 years and has also coached basketball and soccer.  Joe lives in Ellicott City with his wife Jenn, and their 2 multi-sport athlete sons.

Jeff Iannarino

Coach

Coach Iannarino is a 1994 graduate of Centennial High School.  He played college lacrosse at Drexel University, where he was a four year starter from 1996-1999.  Coach Innarino finished his collegiate lacrosse career with 90 goals and 32 assists.  He currently plays lacrosse in the Maryland Masters League.  Jeff lives in Howard County, MD with his wife Shauna and their five sons. 

Bill Holland

Coach

Bill grew up in Howard County and has coached 30+ youth teams for the same programs in which he played as a kid - including Cobra, HCYP, Howard County football, and many others.  This year will be his 6th season as a coaching with HCLP, and he has been successful with Cobra travel teams and the HoCo 2024 Club team.  Bill has completed Level 1 & 2 coaching certification classes with U.S. Lacrosse.  In addition to stressing good fundamental lacrosse, Coach Bill is especially dedicated to his players having fun while learning the great life lessons that youth sports teach.  He is the proud Dad of two sons in the HoCo program.

Mike Machiran

Coach

Mike has 23+ years of experience in lacrosse.  His playing experience includes Cobra, Mount Hebron High School, Towson University, MLL, and Men's Club.  He has also coached lacrosse for more than 14 years - from coaching his sons' Rec team, to Cobra, to HoCo, to winning a state championship as a coach at Mount Hebron High School.  When he is not ciaching or playing lacrosse, Mike stays bust raising his four lacrosse playing kids and working as one of the National Directors of Sales for Under Armour.

Mike Sands

2025 Head Coach

Coach Sands is originally from Long Island where he began playing lacrosse at the age of 5.  Mike's family moved to Northern Virgina, where he attended Woodbridge High School and played both lacrosse and football. Mike was a four year varisty lacrosse starter for Woodbridge, three time Conference Player of the Year, and a three time First Team All-Conference player.  After high school, Mike continued his lacrosse career as a four year starter at Hampden-Sydney College.  Mike is on the Board of Directors for the Western Howard County Warhawk football program where he has coached the past five years.  Mike has also coached for the past six years in the Howard County Lacrosse Program.  Mike resides in Woodbine with his wife Angela, and their two children, Madison and Ethan.

Dave Ratta

2025 Assistant Coach

Dave Ratta grew up in Newton, MA. He is a 1990 graduate of Newton North High School where he played football and lacrosse.  He credits his high school coach, Bussy Adam, for inspiring him to coach youth lacrosse. Coach Ratta was a 1990 first team Eastern Massachusetts All-Star and a 1990 second team Boston Globe All-Scholastic player.  He is a 1994 graduate of Washington College where he started on defense for the Shoremen.  He continued playing lacrosse after college with Glyndon Lacrosse Club.  He recently played for Catonsville Lacrosse Club in the Maryland Masters League.  He has been coaching youth lacrosse in the Catonsville Recreation program for the past five years. Dave lives in Catonsville with his wife, Jenny, and their two boys, Colin and Nicholas.

Dusty Heusser

2026 Head Coach

Dustin Heusser grew up in Howard County playing Cobra Lacrosse.  He is a 1992 graduate of Glenelg High School where he was a three year varsity lacrosse starter, a two time First Team All-County player, and a member of the Howard County All-Star Team. Coach Heusser went on to play briefly at Lynchburg College before transitioning into men's club lacrosse, which he plays with the Glyndon Lacrosse Club in the Maryland Masters League.  He is on the Board of Directors for the Howard County Lacrosse Program as the Boy’s West Vice President, and has coached for the past four years.  Dustin resides in Glenwood with his wife, Elise, and their three children, Kort, Blair and Grant.
