Ron Smith played midfield for four years at UMBC in the 1970s for Hall of Fame Coach Dick Watts. After College, Coach Smith played five years with the Maryland Lacrosse Club, and then with the Crease, Bud Light, Towson, and Overlea lacrosse clubs. Ron also played and coached in the Hero’s summer league when it was not uncommon to have two or three All-Americans on a team. Coach Smith eventually returned to UMBC, where he was an assistant coach for twelve years before reluctantly leaving coaching to focus on career and family. Ron returned to coaching about fifteen years ago, when his son was playing in HCLP. Ron has continued to coach HCLP and Cobra teams to have an impact on a new generation of players and help them learn to love the game.
